Robert L. Freedman was awarded the 2014 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder at the 68th Annual Tony Awards held June 8, 2014 to recognize achievement in Broadway productions during the 2013-2014 season. The ceremony was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and was televised live on CBS. Hugh Jackman was host. The same night, awards also went to Darko Tresnjak for Best Direction of a Musical, Linda Cho for Best Costumes, and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder was named Best Musical of 2014. Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak were nominated for Best Score of a Musical. Also nominated were Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham, for Best Actor in a Musical, Lauren Worsham for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Alexander Dodge for Best Set Design for a Musical, and Dan Moses Schreier for Best Sound Design for a Musical. In total, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder received 10 Tony Nominations, the most nominations of the season.



The 2001 Emmys were postponed twice after the tragedy of September 11th, and the ceremony on November 4th was a solemn affair, highlighted by Barbra Streisand’s stirring rendition of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows lost the Outstanding Mini-series award to Anne Frank (ABC), and the Outstanding Writing award to Conspiracy (HBO).

When the little girl is five, her natural mother dies of Lupus, and the girl’s grandparents try to get custody, in spite of the fact that the child still has one living mother who desperately wants to keep her. The state of Florida did not allow gay adoption at the time, and still doesn’t to this day, in spite of this landmark case. Whoopi Goldberg plays the attorney, and Anne Meara plays the grandmother. What Makes a Family won a GLAAD Award for best television movie of the year.
